HYDRATION FOR PERFORMANCE AND HEALTH

WHY IS HYDRATION IMPORTANT?

Remember that water makes up the majority of your bodies weight, and can alter blood circulation, muscle function, and decision making – all of which can play a pivotal role in performance. When we exercise, our bodies lose water through sweating, which is individual to every person. It is important to check your individual hydration status regularly and alter your drinking to remain in a hydrated state. Always follow the three rules for optimal hydration.

REHYDRATION FOLLOWING PERFORMANCE

Directly following the game, it is important to rehydrate. Water, milk, an unsweetened milk shake or sugar free squash, are usually perfectly adequate. Sports drinks can contain high amounts of sugar and should not be used by children.

HOW CAN I CHECK HYDRATION STATUS?

The ‘pee-test’ is where you look at the colour of urine and use this as an indicator for hydration – lighter colours suggest better hydration.
